The Family Alliance for Development and Cooperation (FADECO) Overview

Challenges Addressed

Solutions Offered

Overview

Location:

Karagwe District, Kagera Region, Tanzania

Mission:

The mission of FADECO is to reach rural farming communities with information on farming methods, human rights, and news to improve the quality of life and livelihood of Tanzanians.

Challenges Addressed

Access to Information: Farming communities are by nature spread out and often remote.  It is difficult for them to access news, educational information, or new ideas that can improve their quality of life and livelihood.

Evnvironmental Degredation:
FADECO identifies farming practices that degrade the environment and introduces new methodologies that are better for the farmers and the environment.

Access to markets and increased profits: FADECO has found that many farmers are missing opportunities to sell their goods to the best markets and to add value to their agricultural products, both of which would increase their profits.

Solutions Offered

Community Radio: Radio FADECO begain in 2007 and reaches five districts in Tanzania.  The radio programming includes news and educational programming on agriculture, human rights, and many other informative topics.  The content is provided by local experts and news stories are submitted via cell phone by community reporters scattered throughout the district.

Community Development Programs: The founder of FADECO runs training programs and demonstrations for the new technologies and farming methods he introduces to the community.
