Their story: The results of the Kenyan presidential election in December, 2007 were disputed. The presidential candidates and their principal supporters were from two different ethnic groups. Historical animosity broke into violence following the election. Over 1,000 people were killed and thousands more lost their homes. In Nairobi, the displaced people formed camps in the public parks. Nairobi Chapel was situated next to one that served as home to more than 6,000 people. Church members took in families, especially mothers with young children. One church member set up a kitchen. The Nairobi Chapel and its daughter churches ran the camp single-handedly until the Red Cross and Kenya Alliance of Churches took over. The church then focused on resettling people into homes and on building peace between the rival ethnic groups.
